There seems to be no end in sight with the political crisis in Rivers State following the emergence of Hon. Victor Jumbo as the new Speaker of the state House of Assembly.
Jumbo, who is loyal to Governor Sim Fubara took the oath of office as the new Speaker on Wednesday in Port Harcourt.
TheHintsNews reports Fubara had on Monday declared that members of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Hon. Martins Amaewhule no longer exist.
The governor and his erstwhile political godfather and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike had been at political loggerhead for a while now.
The crisis in the state forced President Bola Tinubu to intervene and proffered a political solution to the crisis, which the governor had largely complied with.
But in a dramatic turn of events, Fubara, while receiving a Bayelsa State delegation of political and traditional leaders, led by former governor of the state, Senator Seriake Dickson at the Government House on Monday in Port Harcourt lamented that he had been working with his enemies.
“Let me say it here, those group of men who claim that they are Assembly members, they are not existing. I want it to be on record.
“I accepted that peace accord to give them a floating (soft-landing). That’s the truth. There is nothing in that peace accord that is a constitutional issue. It is a political solution to a problem. I accepted it because these are people that were visiting me and we were together in my house,” he had said.
Following Fubara’s statement, the All Progressives Congress (APC) called for the impeachment of the governor.
While the lawmakers loyal to Work are still strategising, the governor moved against the former Speaker, Amaewhule.
