A trigger-happy policeman attached to the Byazhin police station in Kubwa, a satellite town in Bwari area council had killed one Onyebuchi Anene.
Anene, who resides at Arab Road Kubwa was coming back from work around 10 pm on Wednesday night when he had altercation with a bikeman that hit his car.
According to a friend of the deceased who preferred anonymity, during the altercation between Anene and the bikeman, the police on patrol came and directed both of them to follow them to the police station in Byazhin, Kubwa.
However, both men refused saying they had already settled the matter and as such, there would be no need to go to the police station.
The police insisted that they would have to go to the police station, but Anene and the bikeman stood their ground and insisted on not going.
It was at this point one of the police personnel shot carnister at a close range at Anene.
The friend narrated: “The issue happened in Kubwa, Arab road, just very close to his house. He was coming back from work yesterday (Wednesday) night around 10pm.
“By his junction, he had an altercation with a bike man who scratched his car. As they were arguing, policemen on patrol came and insisted they should go to the police station in Byazhin. He and the bike man said they have settled the matter and that they don’t have any reason to go to the police station.
“The police insisted, trying to drag him, but he said he won’t go anywhere because he was close to his house. He said he has forgiven the bike guy.
“But one of the trigger-happy policemen collected a canister, what you saw stuck on his face was a teargas canister. That thing (wound) is very deep. That was what the policeman shot at him, headshot on his face.
“They went to Kubwa general hospital, they rejected them and referred them to the National hospital. He got to the National hospital, but they couldn’t do anything, they said they would have to stabilize him first before they would remove it. This guy died this morning (Thursday).
“We were at the national hospital from 6:30a.m till now (9:45pm). The commissioner of police came, he was just blabbin,” the friend said.
However, there are allegations by friends and family of the deceased that the police are trying to to sweep the matter under the carpet.
As of the time of filing this report, the friends of the deceased including the wife are still at the hospital.
