The House of Representatives has decried the recent invasion of marauding elephants on farm fields in Ngala and Kala-Balge local government areas of Borno State.
The House, therefore, urged the Ministry of Environment and the National Wildlife Park to provide immediate and long term solutions to address the menace of the marauding elephants in the area.
It also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to provide the victims with relief.
The resolution of the House followed the adoption of a motion moved at the plenary on Thursday by Hon. Zainab Gimba.
Moving the motion, she said that the marauding elephants are from Waza National Park, Cameroon from where they yearly move back and forth through its route in Ngala and Kala, Balge local government areas of Borno State.
Gimba added that in the cause of their movement, they destroyed crops and other farm produce, thus affecting the means of livelihood of the people in the Areas.
She expressed worry that the destruction of these farms might further precipitate untold hardship on the people in food security, Considering that these places are under military control.
The lawmaker recalled that attempts were made by the Conservator General to acquire some equipments meant to scare away the elephants which in effect would curtail damage to crops and other food products on the farm fields;
Gimba commended the government of Borno State for its quick response though overwhelmed, hence, the need for the federal government to come to their rescue.
