Mpape: Abuja Community Where Catholic Priests Violate Oath of Celibacy

Mpape, is a suburb  in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with close proximity to the city centre. Like other suburbs like Dutse, Kabusa, Durumi, Apo, it is populated by low income earners.

However, towards the twilight of administration of  former President Goodluck Jonathan, Mpape was renamed Maitama extension.

Ever since, there has been gradual demolition  of the hilly community. The community is located opposite Maitama, across the expressway linking Asokoro and Kubwa.

Although largely undeveloped, Mpape has lots of potential. Its excellent location near Maitama, its hilly nature and plans of future development makes for an attractive investment. Places of interest include Grange Hill Hotel & Resort, Maitama Hills and Mpape Market.

Like other suburbs, married men often rent houses for their girl friends in the suburb, which they perceived to be cost effective rather than patronising hotels whenever they are home away from home. Those that didn’t take the initiative of renting houses for girlfriends in such places visit such places quite often.

While there had been tales of the escapades of some Reverend Fathers in the past, most people still find it difficult to believe — maybe because of the trust they have in such clergymen or because lack of strong evidence to convince them.

(Stella), not real name, was one of such people. However, she recently got the shock of her life when she heeded the plea of a friend who had come visiting from Kaduna.

The friend, (Rachael) not real name, a graduate, who just finished the one year mandatory National Youth Corps Service (NYSC), came to Abuja on the invitation of a friend – a catholic priest.

On the faithful day, Rachael agreed to meet with the friend, who she already knew to be a Reverend Father from Jos, Plateau state.

They agreed to meet at a garden in Utako Abuja. On getting to Utako, Rachel realized that three other young  Reverend Fathers were with the other catholic priest  she went to Utako to meet.

While having a nice time with the catholic priests, all who came to Abuja from Jos, Rachael was persuaded to  invite a friend of hers to join in the merriment.

It was at this point Rachael chatted up Stella on whatsapp to find out where she was at that night, which was around 9:30 pm.

Stella narrated: “I was at home watching film on my phone when my friend chatted me up. She asked me where I was and I told her I was at home. She told me she was bored and needed me to come around to keep her company.

“I said I can’t come out because it was getting late and besides I didn’t have transport fare. She persuaded me. I later agreed to go there. They booked Uba for me that took me to the place.

“When I got there, I saw my friend in the midst of four guys. When it was getting late, I told her I wanted to go, but she persuaded me to stay. From there her friends drove straight to Mpape. I have not even visited Mpape before.”

In spite of the fact that catholic priests swear oaths of celibacy which forbids them from sex, the priest threw caution to the wind and drove straight to a  hotel in Mpape, a suburb in the Federal Capital City.

Stella added: “On getting to Mpape, they drove straight to one hotel. My friend went into a room with her friend. I was left with the other man after the two remaining guys have left for their rooms.

“I had no choice, I followed the man into the room. He was even free, he was talking to me as if we had known each other before. He went to the bathroom to shower. He asked me to shower, but I refused because I was angry about the whole thing.

“The man started romancing me but when he realised I was not ready to give in, he got angry, he asked if I didn’t know the reason I  was at  the hotel with him. I asked him what he meant by that. I told him it was my friend that persuaded me to come to the garden, which I reluctantly agreed to.

“It was at this point he told me he was actually the one chatting with me with my friends phone. He said whenever I responded to the chat, he was showing others and they were laughing. I felt so embarrassed.

“He said even if I was told that nothing would happen, but now that I am with him in the room, do I have to be told that something will happen.

“He later left me. I laid on the floor, watching a film on my phone because I couldn’t sleep. It was this moment I had  the opportunity to ask him if he was a catholic priest and he told me yes. He saw the expression on my face, he asked me what the problem was and I said nothing. He told me they all came  from Jos.”

Stella said that the following morning, he started calling her friend so that they could leave on time, the friend wasn’t picking for more than 30 minutes. He said the priest called his friend but he wasn’t picking either.

She said when the priest got tired of calling, he decided to go to their  room. He knocked several times but there was no response. He realised they were still making love.

Stella added that the friend subsequently showed up in their room, while the priest left to meet his friend outside.

She said before they got outside, the priests had left without even saying goodbye.
