The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has warned that Kaduna, Niger, Kogi, Kwara and Sokoto states are at risk of flooding following the increase in water level at various dams across the country.
The Director General, Umar Mohammed in a statement issued Thursday warned that Rivers Niger and Benue have reached peak levels, posing a serious threat of flooding to surrounding communities.
He added that tributaries such as the Rima, Kaduna, and Gongola rivers have also reached peak levels.
Mohammed noted that several major dams are experiencing surges in reservoir levels due to the peak of the rainy season.
On the status of major dams, he said Kainji Dam is currently spilling excess water, adding that communities at risk include Kainji town, Patigi, New Bussa, Borgu, Mokwa, and other towns along River Niger in Niger and Kwara States.
Also, Mohammed said Jebba Dam is currently spilling excess water in coordination with Kainji Dam.
He noted that communities at risk include Jebba town, Gungu, Gana, Fanga, Bele, Bere, Gaba, Baro, and other settlements along River Niger in Kwara and Kogi States.
Mohammed said: “Zungeru Dam – Not spilling. Reservoir water level stands at 229.15m, with a downstream (Tail Race) level of 134.17m.
“Goronyo Dam – Filled to its design capacity of 288m and currently spilling at maximum rate, causing flooding in Goronyo, Wamako, Shinaka Yerimawa, Kurukuru, and other communities in Sokoto State.
“Kiri Dam – Located on River Gongola in Adamawa State, the dam is spilling. Downstream water level stands at 8.42m, resulting in flooding of communities such as Kiri, Tallum, Banjiram, Purokayo-Lakumna, and Shelleng.
“Lagdo Dam (Cameroon) – Reservoir water level stands at 37m (design height: 40m). The dam is not spilling. Current flooding in Adamawa State, particularly in Yola North, Yola South, Girei, and Numan, is attributed to heavy rainfall and internally generated runoff within the Benue catchment.
“NiHSA urges residents in flood-prone areas to protect lives and property, assuring joint action with dam authorities.”
