Ahead of the forthcoming National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), there are strong indications that Dr. Ben Nwoye and Hon. Paul Yovwe Oyiborume may emerge as consensus candidates for two key positions in the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
TheHintsNews reports that the ruling party had scheduled March 27 and 28 for the National Convention of the party.
Party insiders disclosed that Dr. Ben Nwoye is being widely considered for the position of Deputy National Chairman (South), while Hon. Paul Yovwe Oyiborume is gathering significant support to emerge as National Secretary of the ruling party.
At the moment, there is ongoing high level politicking among party leaders across the six geo-political aimed at producing consensus candidates in order to ensure unity and avoid divisive contests at the convention ahead of the 2027 elections
The consensus arrangement, it was gathered, was part of efforts by party leaders to maintain stability within the APC.
However, Nwoye, a former Chairman of the APC in Enugu State, is regarded by many party stakeholders as a seasoned administrator and loyal party man who has remained steadfast in strengthening the party’s structures in the South East and beyond.
In the same vein, Hon. Paul Oyiborume has been described by supporters as an experienced grassroots mobiliser with a strong track record in party organization and political coordination.
His emergence, party sources say, is seen as part of broader efforts to deepen internal cohesion and strengthen the APC’s administrative capacity ahead of future electoral contests.
Although the APC has yet to make a formal announcement, several stakeholders believe that if the ongoing consultations are concluded successfully, the duo may be formally adopted before the convention.
The APC National Convention is expected to bring together delegates, party leaders, and stakeholders from across the country to elect members of the NWC who will steer the affairs of the party in the coming years.
“There have been extensive consultations across different blocs of the party. The idea is to build unity going into the convention and position the party strongly for the future,” the source said.
Analysts are of the view that the emergence of consensus candidates often reflects internal negotiations designed to balance regional interests, reward party loyalty, and ensure a smooth convention process.
