The Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Chris Najomo, has warned that recent incidents of unruly passenger behavior in the aviation sector could damage public trust if not properly handled.
Najomo stated this on Tuesday in Abuja during an emergency meeting of the National Civil Aviation Security Committee (NCASC) Tuesday in Abuja.
The DGCA emphasised that the recent occurrences involving unruly passengers, if not well handled, could erode trust in the aviation sector.
Najomo stressed the need to strengthen inter-agency coordination among regulatory bodies, security agencies, and law enforcement to ensure a safe and secure air transport sector.
He added that the meeting aimed at determining and deploying immediate corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future even as he highlighted the importance of training, retraining, and continuous training on matters related to aviation security.
Najomo added: “Today’s engagement is not about pointing fingers or apportioning blame – No, that would not achieve the desired results – It is rather about listening, discussing and awakening us to our individual and collective responsibilities towards a safe and secure air transport sector.”
“We are here also to analyse and understand the chain of failures that permitted the incidents, unify and strengthen inter-agency coordination, determine and deploy immediate corrective measures, identify “quick wins” and policy gaps, reiterate the need for training and awareness on aviation security.”
The meeting brought together stakeholders from the aviation industry to discuss and find solutions to the recent incidents of unruly passenger behavior, with the goal of restoring public confidence and ensuring a safe and secure air transport sector.
