The federal government Tuesday banned 18 foreign universities operating in Nigeria, describing them as “degree mills.”’ The National Universities Commission (NUC) in a statement noted that the federal government had not licensed the affected universities and they had been closed down. It, therefore, warned Nigerians to avoid enrolling in such institutions. It stressed that the foreign universities were closed down for violating the Education (National Minimum Standards, etc.) Act of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. Some members of the Onikoyi royal family in Lagos Island have raised an alarm over an alleged attempt by a son of the immediate past Onikoyi, Oba Ibikunle Fafunwa, to impose himself as the next Onikoyi. The federal government Tuesday announced the suspension of evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from Togo and Benin Republic. The federal government has exempted 41 items from paying Value Added Tax (VAT) and import duties as part of fiscal incentives for the presidential gas for growth initiative. The Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun made this known in a circular issued on December 7, 2023.
