Ikire, the headquarters of Irewole Local Government was thrown into panic mood on Monday following the purported killing of the reinstated Chairman of the council, Mr. Remi Abass by thugs believed to be working for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after taking over the council secretariat.
TheHintsNews reports that there was tension across the state following the plans by the sacked Chairmen and councillors to take over the Secretariat following the last week Appeal Court judgement.
Checks revealed that while APC claimed that the judgement delivered last week had reinstated the sacked elected council chairmen and councillors, the State government said the election was nullified by the Federal High Court in Osogbo.
However, Abass, in the early hours of Monday led other sacked council officials to take over the Secretariat in accordance with the court’s verdict.
After gaining control of the secretariat, hoodlums allegedly working for PDP stormed the secretariat to dislodge them.
During the fracas, there were exchanges of gunshots during which Abass was killed while several others were injured.
Some hoodlums also stormed the highway shooting sporadically into the air, creating tension in the community and forcing motorists to make detours to avoid being caught in the crossfire.
A source who did not want his name in print said: “The thugs came out from the building opposite the Secretariat, wielding guns. They deliberately targeted the council chairman. Many surrounded him and did not allow him to escape from the scene and killed him”, a source revealed.
When contacted, Osun State Police spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola said she will investigate the matter and reach back.
