The refusal of some senior officers in the Nigeria Customs Service to proceed on compulsory retirement leave as required by civil service rule is already causing ripples within the Service.
The development has created confusion and an atmosphere of uncertainty in the Service.
TheHintsNews gathered that the names of the retired officers who refused to leave office are
ACG B Imam, ACG IG Umar, ACG IQ Ogbudu, Compt. MT Awe, Compt. KR Kolade.
Checks revealed that their continued stay in the office contradicts the NCS Act 2023 and the Civil Service Rules on employment, age and retirement.
It was further gathered that the newly promoted officers are unable to take over their new roles, while the retired officers, still report to work, creating an awkward situation.
According to a realible source who preferred anonymity said the Comptroller-General of Customs lacks the authority to retire or promote a certain level of officers without the approval of the board, which is currently non-existent.
The source added that there have been allegations that some retired officers have amassed significant wealth and influence, which they continue to wield even after retirement.
The source further said President Bola Tinubu should not extend the tenure of retired customs officers for several reasons, saying extending the tenure of retired customs officers could create a system where meritocracy is undermined, and younger officers are denied opportunities for growth and advancement.
The source added: “Allowing retired officers to remain in their positions can block the career progression of younger, more energetic, and potentially more innovative officers.
“Extending the tenure of retired customs officers can perpetuate corruption, as those who have been in the system for a long time may have established networks and relationships that can be used for personal gain.”
“Extending the tenure of retired customs officers may contravene the laws governing retirement in the civil service, which can create legal and administrative challenges.”
