Akoko-Edo Local Government has been thrown into tension following revelations of a covert plan by a few individuals to unseat the Acting Chairman of the Council and replace him with someone from the Southern Constituency of the Area.
The move, which insiders described as a selfish plot, has been met with stiff resistance, particularly from the Okpameri people, who see it as a direct affront against their long-standing loyalty and contributions to the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC).
For years, the Okpameri bloc has been one of the strongest pillars of support for the party, standing firm during difficult elections and keeping faith even in the face of neglect.
Yet, despite these sacrifices, the people pointed out that they have received little or no tangible appointments from the present government.
Apart from the current chairmanship and the appointment of Architect Fashanu, the major Community has been largely sidelined in the sharing of political offices.
“To even think of taking away the one position we are holding onto is not only unfair, it is a slap on the face of our people,” a concerned stakeholder noted.
The Southern Constituency, where the alleged replacement is being plotted, is already saturated with several high-profile political appointments.
Okpameri Leaders argued that it would be gross injustice to strip them of their only significant slot and hand it over to a zone that has already benefited disproportionately.
Stakeholders across the Community also rallied in defense of the acting chairman, describing his performance so far as impressive and a source of pride for the local government.
“We are fine with the acting chairman. He is making us proud with his work and should be allowed to concentrate on delivering results,” another source added.
As the news of this secret plan continues to spread, observers warn that the party risks alienating one of its most consistent and reliable bases of support in Akoko-Edo.
For now, the Okpameri people say their message is clear: leave the acting chairman to continue his good work and stop any attempt that could destabilize the fragile unity of the Council.
