The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), says the list of Registered Builders, licenced to practice in Nigeria will soon be circulated publicly.
Making the list public became imperative following the sad incident of collapsed building in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state which claimed the life of one favour Chukwuemeka Okoro, while five persons were rescued.
The Registrar/Secretary to Council, Bldr. Adetunji Adeniran, in a statement issued on Monday noted that the alleged site Engineer, one Felix Udoh of Felixzity High Technology Limited fled, before he was on 7/8/2023 arrested by Anti-Robbery Squad of the State Command.
He said the name Felix Udoh was not contained in the register of Builders licensed to practice in Nigeria as of September 5, 2023.
Adetunji opined that building is a profession which is regulated by the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) which was established by an Act of the National Assembly, CAP B13 LFN 2002 (formerly Decree 45 of 1989).
He said: “Following a thorough review of the Register of Builders in Nigeria, established pursuant to Sections 8 (1), (2) and 9 (1), (2) of the Builders Registration Act CAP B.13 LFN 2004, the name Felix Anietie Udo is NOT contained in the register of Builders, licensed to practice in Nigeria as of September 5, 2023.
“Should the said Felix Anietie Udo have held out to be a Builder, as indicated in your speech, he would have committed an offence under Section 19 (1) a and b which state as follows: Any person, not being a registered builder who – a. for, or in expectation of reward, practices or holds himself out to practice as such; orb.
“Without reasonable excuse, takes or uses any name, title, addition, or description implying that he is authorised by law to practice as a registered builder, commits an offence punishable under this Act.
“In line with its commitment to work with Government agencies in the effort to eradicate quackery in practice, Council strongly requests and urges that the said Felix Anietie Udo be prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the Builders (Registration, etc.) Act.
“Council offers our support and willingness to testify and support the prosecution of the suspect in every way possible. Council states without any fear of contradiction that to date, no Builder has been involved in managing the production process of any collapsed building in Nigeria.”
The Council urged members of the public to protect their investments and be discerning, by engaging only Registered Builders for production of building construction projects.
Adeniran however said, ” While list of Registered Builders, licenced to practice in Nigeria would soon be circulated publicly, enquiries on Builders could be directed to the Council at the addresses and contact numbers indicated.
“Be wise, avoid Quackery on your building projects, engage Professional Builders,” he admonished.
