The federal government has announced that it would temporarily close the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, from October 20, 2026, for runway rehabilitation, resurfacing and extension works ahead of the Christmas travel season.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Friday in Abuja.
Keyamo said the closure, expected to last approximately 25 days, is a joint partnership between the federal government and the Imo State Government to improve safety, operational efficiency and capacity at the airport.
He added that he spoke earlier with the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma earlier on Friday along with other critical stakeholders in Imo State and South-East who have agreed on the need for the temporary closure.
The minister described the airport as a critical gateway for people, businesses and economic activities of the South-East.
He noted: “The rehabilitation will involve repairs to deteriorated sections of the runway pavement, treatment of extensive surface cracks, filling of potholes and resurfacing, alongside the planned extension.
“When completed, the runway will be restored to a safer condition and will be able to accommodate larger aircraft, including wide-body aircraft, subject to regulatory requirements.”
Keyamo said the timing was deliberate to prepare for increased passenger traffic to the South-East during Christmas.
“The timing of this intervention is particularly important as we approach the Christmas travel season, when passenger traffic and flight movements to Owerri traditionally increase. It is our responsibility to ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in the right condition,” he said.
He acknowledged the contribution of the Imo State Government to the extension project, saying it demonstrates what can be achieved when both tiers of government work together.
The minister apologised for the inconvenience the closure will cause, stressing that aviation safety cannot be compromised.
“Whilst we recognise that the temporary closure will cause some inconvenience to passengers and other airport users, we appeal for their understanding,” he said.
The minister pointed out that the federal government, through the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) would continue to engage airlines and stakeholders to minimise disruption.
He stressed that passengers scheduled to travel through Owerri during the period have been advised to contact their airlines for information on cancellations, rescheduling and alternative arrangements.
Keyamo added that confirmed closure and reopening dates will be communicated through official channels.
“Our commitment remains to provide safer, more efficient and modern aviation infrastructure across the country,” he assured.
