The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has revealed that the Enugu Air Crew knew the autobrake was not working before the mishap that happened at the Benin airport.

To this end, the agency said the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) should ensure that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) remove the fixed structures of the decommissioned localiser installation located at the end of Runway 05 at Oba Akenzua II Airport, Benin.

It said the NCAA should ensure that the Control Tower is positioned to provide unrestricted view of all the movement areas of the aerodrome.

The agency also recommended that FAAN should provide a suitable control tower location for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to ensure unrestricted view of all the movement areas of the aerodrome.

It said the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) should restore and maintain the serviceability of the weather information display equipment provided for operational use at the airport and the control tower.

It noted that NiMet should also ensure that current meteorological information is reliably available to Air Traffic Services for timely dissemination to flight crews.

These, were part of the recommendations contained in the preliminary report on the Accident involving an Embraer ERJ 170-100LR Aircraft with nationality and registration marks 5N-ENR operated by Enugu Air Limited, which occurred at Oba Akenzua II Airport, Benin, Edo State on 23 July, 2026.

TheHintsNews reports that on 23 July, 2026 at 14:00 hrs, an Embraer ERJ 170-100LR aircraft with nationality and registration marks 5N-ENR, operated by Enugu Air Limited as scheduled passenger flight ENU4264, departed Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos for Oba Akenzua II Airport, Benin on an Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) flight plan.

Onboard were five crew members and 63 passengers, with a fuel endurance of 2 hours 10 minutes.

The aircraft touched down about 1,641.5m from the threshold of the 2,400m Runway 05, leaving about 758.5m of runway remaining.

The report said: “Enugu Air Crew knew autobrake was not working before benin landing

“During the approach briefing, the crew stated that the autobrake was not working and that manual braking would be used.”

The report disclosed that the ATC advised the crew that the runway was wet, but the communication did not include a Runway Condition Report or Runway Condition Code.

The report revealed that the weather information display equipment in the control tower was unserviceable at the time of the occurrence.

The report added that an uncompleted building obstructed the control tower’s line of sight toward the end of Runway 05.

“The aircraft struck two fixed concrete structures belonging to a decommissioned localizer installation after leaving the runway.

“Landing gear assemblies separated, the horizontal stabilizer ruptured, the fuselage was damaged and both engines contacted the ground.

Shows the severity of the occurrence and provides a detailed account of the physical consequences.”

The report added that all 63 passengers and five crew members evacuated without injury, saying the fuselage remained intact and there was no post-impact fire.
