The Osun State Police Command has expressed concern about the circulation of false and misleading information on social media and other communication platforms alleging banditry invasion in some parts of the State.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi in a statement issued Tuesday said reports in some sections of the media about the invasion of terrorists in part of the state are unfounded, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic, fear, and tension among law-abiding residents.
He noted: “Extensive security assessments and intelligence gathering conducted by the Command have not substantiated the claims being circulated.”
Ojelabi noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, therefore, warned individuals and groups involved in the deliberate creation, publication, and dissemination of false security alerts to desist forthwith.
He added: “The spread of unverified information not only undermines public confidence but also constitutes a threat to public peace and security.
“Members of the public are advised to verify security-related information through official channels before sharing same.
“Anyone found spreading false information, capable of causing public disorder or inciting fear, will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the relevant provisions of the law.
The Command reassured residents of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property and urged citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and continue with their lawful activities without fear.
Ojelabi stressed that security agencies remain on alert and are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of all residents across the State as the Command has deployed covert and Violent Crime Response operatives to be on the lookout.
He urged the public to report any suspicious movement or security concern to the nearest police station or other security agencies for prompt action.
