The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, says the Governor of Ondo state, Rotimi Akeredolu is incapacitated and presently hospitalised overseas.
Adamu stated this on Monday during the meeting between the leadership of the party and APC state Chairmen.
He also expressed regrets over the kidnapping of APC state chairman in Ekiti State, while hoping that he would be free soonest.
“We announce with the deepest sense of sorrow, a member of the state chairmen, the chairman of Ekiti state. We got to know today that he was kidnapped. And as at the time of coming to this meeting, he was still in the hands of the kidnappers.”
“In the same vein, we regret to announce the extreme incapacity of the Governor of Ondo state who we understand has been hospitalised overseas. We wish and pray for him for a speedy recovery.”
Extension of leave
Earlier, Ondo lawmakers have also approved an extension of the medical leave for Akeredolu.
However, no date was fixed for the resumption of the Governor in the new extension.
Oladiji said Akeredolu forwarded the letter of extension on medical leave in line with Section 190 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
He stressed that the Governor, in the letter, said his Deputy, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, would continue to act as Governor until a written declaration to the contrary is made.
The Speaker, who expressed appreciation to God for the speedy recovery of the Governor, expressed optimism that he would soon resume his duty.
The new extension, according to Speaker Olamide Oladiji, was based on the doctor’s advice on the need for the Governor to take adequate rest after recuperating.
SaharaReporters had exclusively reported in January that Akeredolu was treating an ailment said to be blood cancer (leukemia).
Leukemia is a cancer of the blood caused by a rise in the number of white blood cells in the body.
For sufferers, the white blood cells crowd out the red blood cells and platelets needed by the body to stay healthy.
White blood cells are potent infection fighters which grow and divide in an orderly way, as the body needs them. But in people with leukemia, the bone marrow produces an excessive amount of abnormal white blood cells, which don’t function properly.
It is a cancer of blood-forming tissues that hinders the body’s ability to fight infections.
The types that exist include acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Treatment for leukemia can be complex depending on the type of leukemia and other factors.
