The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State Chapter, Sarafadeen Awotunde has expressed optimism that the Supreme Court would soon resolve the local government crisis in the state.
TheHintsNews reports that in February, Appeal Court judgement reinstated sacked elected council chairmen and councillors.
The appellate court overturned the judgment of the Federal High Court in Osogbo which nullified their election.
Checks revealed that five people lost their lives, while several others were injured during the forceful takeover of local government secretariat across the state by the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the enforced the judgement of the Appeal Court.
However, in a statement issued Thursday, Awotunde acknowledged the recent political challenges in the state since February, but expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would soon resolve all lingering issues.
Awotunde, who is also the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, Ikirun, described democracy as the most viable system of government that guarantees people’s participation and sustainable development.
In his Democracy Day message, he assured the people of Osun that the local government system under his leadership remains committed to delivering mass-driven democratic governance that prioritises the welfare and aspirations of the people at the grassroots level.
Awotunde added: “Democracy is a collective responsibility and we must all shun any act capable of undermining the progress of our dear state.
“The present administration under Governor Ademola Adeleke is committed to delivering good governance, and we must continue to support him to achieve this noble objective.”
Awotunde emphasised that the local government system in the state would continue to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.
