The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration (CIOTA), has expressed concern over the recent incident involving a Soldier and a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer which has brought public ridicule to both organisations.
Its President, Segun Obayendo, in a statement issued Thursday said the unfortunate confrontation, captured in the media, has highlighted the need for a renewed commitment for all stakeholders in the industry to advocate for professionalism, cooperation and respect among all sectors of law enforcement and public service.
He noted that CIOTA as an body, acknowledged the importance of maintaining order and safety on the roads, as well as the critical roles that both the military and civilian traffic management personnel play in achieving these goals.
He said: “However, the incident in question has underscored the necessity for continuous training, communication, and collaboration among different law enforcement entities to ensure the safety of all citizens and the smooth functioning of our transport systems.”
Obayendo called on both the military and LASTMA to investigate the incident thoroughly and take appropriate disciplinary actions, if warranted, against those involved in the altercation.
He added: “In light of this regrettable incident, CIOTA urges all law enforcement agencies and traffic management bodies to engage in cross-training programs that foster mutual understanding and cooperation by working together, sharing insights, and leveraging each other’s expertise.
“We can create an environment that upholds the principles of law, order, and public service while minimizing conflicts that can undermine the reputation of both organizations.”
